Ledge Cottage, Pembroke, ME
A home designed to be exceptionally energy efficient and with no maintenance required for the exterior.
Utilizing 8” thick, double stud walls which eliminate a large amount of cold-bridging, and using triple pane windows, this home is remarkably efficient and could easily become ‘net-zero’ with the addition of a solar array. The air barrier and insulation details allow the home to ‘breathe’ and release excess moisture, creating a healthy indoor environment.
The design goal was to make the house super-efficient yet still have the feel and appearance of a traditional cozy cottage.
A weekend retreat for a professional couple from Greater Portland, this cottage is designed to fit harmoniously into its beautiful surroundings, and become part of, rather than to dominate its site.
Nestled in between a series of exposed ledges, overlooking a tidal cove the cottage is designed to be energy efficient, with a maintenance free exterior.
The cottage also features many custom designed and built pieces of cherry furniture and light fixtures, crafted out of copper and pine.
A large family lakeside retreat designed to comfortably accommodate 10 overnight guests. The lay of the land allowed for a large, open, cathedral ceilinged living space over the bedrooms, each of which has direct patio door access to the lake.
The retreat is designed with many ‘craftsmen style’ details, and features a large amount of custom furniture and light fixtures. The dining room features a 10’ x 4’ solid cherry dinning table to seat 12, which had to be built in place. Careful siting allowed for most of the existing trees on the site to remain.
The entire property is located within the Ponds' set-back, and an existing very small shack was removed. Shore front regulations allow a 30% increase in size, only allowing for a fairly small new cottage.
To make it ‘feel’ larger the space inside expands both in height and width from the rear of the cottage towards the pond, with an expanse of glass overlooking the water. To nestle the cottage into its surroundings, the rear is built into the hillside. The curved front of the cottage maximizes pond views and provides different views from each room. Also, energy efficient with triple pane windows, and with a maintenance free exterior.
This contemporary home is perched on the bold Maine ocean front, overlooking a rocky beach featuring dramatic pink granite. Built on a natural rock outcrop, the home is placed both to maximize the astonishing views between the mainland out to several islands and a lighthouse, as well as preserve a beautiful mossy area adjacent to the dwelling. Using a biophilic design approach, this ancient area of moss, along with exposed granite ledges and abundant spruce trees, provide an opportunity to appreciate and preserve the delicate natural beauty of the shoreline. This 'artist’s home’ is also designed to inspire creativity, and provide dramatic space to display artwork.
A small one-room ‘get away’ cabin on a pristine Maine lake that embraces quiet solitude. Nestled into the surrounding forest, this cabin features a breathtaking sunset view over the lake.
Minimal clearing was done on this site for optimal integration of the dwelling with the natural beauty of the surrounding pine woodlands.
